We recently connected with Kevin Atkinson and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
Every Monday morning meeting, we conduct an exercise called “Headlines.” Each team member reviews their client list and shares any significant updates or achievements. We compile this information into a document for everyone to review. Throughout the week, these updates serve as talking points when interacting with clients. This practice has been highly successful, consistently earning us positive feedback for our staff’s genuine interest and engagement.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Upon relocating to Los Angeles, I initially joined a start-up that unfortunately only lasted six months. This experience solidified my desire to become an entrepreneur, although I was uncertain about the specific path I wanted to pursue. To gain clarity, I listed my passions, which included fitness, coffee, and travel.
Shortly thereafter, I started a dual venture: personal training and an online coffee subscription service. It quickly became evident that I had found my calling, as neither endeavor felt like work. Ultimately, personal training proved to be more lucrative, prompting me to focus solely on this area. The experience with the coffee business, however, was invaluable and provided significant learning opportunities.
How’d you meet your business partner?
When I first opened Sweat 60 in 2018, I was considering who to bring on board. I envisioned someone with a strong fitness background, an engaging personality, and a presence that would resonate with our clients. One name came to mind—a girl I followed on Instagram. We had a mutual friend, so I decided to take a chance and send her a direct message, mentioning our common connection. I estimated the odds of her responding at about 2%.
To my surprise, within a couple of hours, she not only replied but also expressed interest in working at the gym. Shortly thereafter, she joined Sweat 60 as our head trainer. Fast forward six years, and she has become an incredible business partner. More importantly, we’ve been married for four years and have two wonderful children together.
